Artist Websites and Why Artists Need Websites
I recently spoke with a New York City artist who asked me why she needed a Website—what it would do for her. I asked how many gallery shows she did you year, how many pieces were shown, and how many pieces she has in total. She said that she had shown about 30 of her most recent works, at two shows. She added that there was 50 years of work stored in her studio.
This artist needs a Website because I can’t see her work, and I probably never would otherwise. It seems almost a moral obligation to make every effort to give the world a chance to see your work. The increasing ease of building gallery Websites is a creative blessing. What does the artist “get out of it?” Well… the honor and privilege of sharing their gift with millions of people worldwide. Oh, and they can put a “BUY NOW” button next to each piece and maybe sell a few to collectors in Bolivia, Botswana, Bangladesh, and Brooklyn.
